The Koi pond that came with the house had been neglected for quite some time. There was no filter or pump so the water was all green and stagnant. I'm am very surprised that fish even made it through the winter. Now Kermit is all hoppin' up in this pad!
We got a filter/pump/fountain kit and now you can finally see all the way to the bottom (which is about 18" deep, so not really deep at all). The fountain makes a slight bubbling sound, so it's pretty nice to open the bedroom window and go to sleep and wake to the sound of water bubblin' in the pond. During the cleaning process I had to put the fish in a bucket so I could drain the pond. He was pretty disturbed, all thrashing around in the bucket. When I went to drain the rest of the water, I felt the same thrashing of an excited fish 4 more times. Turns out there were more koi in the pond - 5 total. The biggest is the orange one and the other 4 are all smaller brown ones. Which means its time to get some new "color-enhancing' koi food to fatten up the small ones and make them turn orange too (if they even do that, I'm not sure)
It looks kinda boring now that the green is all gone. The lilly pads that are there are brown, so I think it's time for a trip to the Lowe's garden center and get a couple more water plants that are nice and bright green so make it look more lively in the habitat. These fish better learn to eat out of our hands after all the effort we are making to give them a nice home.
